On sale with Bruce Greetham at Classic Benz Ltd is a very unique and rare Mercedes-Benz Motorcar, and one I don't get to see very often, or at all. To say this car has a History is an understatement. The files covering this History from 1951 are outstanding. Built in 1951, and was used by the MI6 in Berlin during most of the interesting periods of the Cold War. The car was owned by a MI6 agent who worked with George Blake, who turned out to be a Russian spy. The car was registered at the same address as Blake during its time in Berlin. All documentation and photographs are filed away covering this story. All owners from 1951 are listed by times, dates, up to the current day.
It was imported into the UK in 1956 after lying decaying for decades. It was finally purchased by a very well-known Mercedes collector, Mr Foat, who restored this fine piece of History to concours standard as you see today. The car has since won many awards for its condition alongside a display Mercedes-Benz Museum. There are now only a handful of these fine machines available, and this one is probably the best you will come across. The car has been praised by Sir Sterling Moss and John Surtees for a wonderful contribution to Mercedes. The history file covers four binders covering the journey and restoration of this fine motor car.
This is a four-cylinder flat-head side valve engine with a 6 Volt battery and ignition system, with a four-speed manual gearbox. Drum brakes around. all mechanicals have been restored to as-new condition. The soft top is a very easy raise and lower operation, as very much to the mountings of the SLs from the 60s.
